Principal's Blog

August 29, 2018

Parents,

I would like to thank you for visiting my Blog.  It is my intent to post important information about the school year on this Blog as well as answer questions that you might have.  Simply send me an email with your question and I will provide the answer to your question on this site.  We have currently been in school for 7 days and I am excited to say that the students are doing a great job.  I have had numerous comments from them regarding the geothermal cooling that the main portion of the building has.  Dixon High School is a wonderful learning atmosphere.

One new initiative that we implementing this year is our student mentoring program.  The purpose of this program is to provide new students and freshmen with important information regarding Dixon High School.  With some help from Mr. Magnifici and Mr. Bullock, I was able to create 40 student groups between 4 and 6 students.  Students who participate in these groups will receive 30 minutes of community service time that they can apply toward a final exam exemption - provided they meet the exemption criteria.  These mentoring  sessions are voluntary for freshmen, but I have asked them to attend the first session to see if it is helpful.  If you have any questions, please contact me at your convenience.

Parents,

April is winding down, which means prom and graduation are here.  This Saturday, we will be hosting prom at the Brandywine with post prom at Dixon High School.  This is an exciting time for your children.  As parents, we walk a fine line between allowing our children freedom as well as providing them with boundaries.  Please communicate with your child so that their prom can be a safe and enjoyable time.

On another note, we have been informed that another national student walk out is scheduled for April 20, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. through the rest of the school day.  While I support our students' right to free speech, I am responsible for their education.  The compromise I discussed with the students was to allow them to protest before school, after school, and at lunch.  These 3 opportunities will provide students with the opportunity to be heard.  Should students decide to miss instruction time and continue to protest, they will be subject to school discipline.  This again is a teachable moment.  As adults, we would face consequences for walking off of the job to protest.  This is the example I shared with students to help them understand where I am coming from.  I ask that parents speak with their kids to discuss this issue.  Please review the parameters in the letter that was sent home or go to our website for the specific guidelines..  If you have any questions, please call me.

Respectfully,

Dr. Michael L. Grady

Parents,

The recent school shooting in Florida has prompted some of our students to ask to participate in a nation-wide student walk-out that is planned for March 14, 2018 from 10:00 a.m. - 10:17 a.m.  The administration at Dixon High School does not endorse any walk-out during the school day.  However, I believe that this is a teachable moment.  Specifically, I believe that we can show students how to be participatory members of this democratic republic.

After speaking with the student council last week, I expressed my concerns with the students regarding the walk- out.  I also spoke with them about how young voters are under-represented in elections.  Finally, I talked to them about how to contact the elected officials who represent us, regardless of their political viewpoints.

With all of that said, I told our students that should they choose to walk out of class on March 14 and sit silently in the hallway, they would not receive discipline, but would be responsible for the instruction that they missed.  This time would have to made up on their own time with their teacher's approval.  Students who do not wish to participate will stay in class and receive the regularly scheduled instruction.

My last point on this topic to the students was to treat each other with respect.  It seems like we have lost the ability to disagree on issues and treat people with differing views with respect.  I told the students that their beliefs are their beliefs.  I encouraged them to respectfully listen when someone with an opposing view shares their thoughts with them.

It is my hope that the students understand the importance of being an informed citizen in the United States of America and they will learn from this tragedy.  If you have any questions, please contact me at your convenience.

Parents,

We are 1 month into second semester and are already registering students for fall 2018.  Please check with your child regarding the courses they have selected.  If you have specific questions, please contact the guidance department.  The asbestos abatement at Dixon High School is under way and the second floor has 4 rooms completed.  Workers will continue to remove the asbestos on the east end of the second floor and if all goes well will complete those rooms in approximately two weeks.  We appreciate the students and faculty's patience during this process.  The counselors are offering a Strategies for Life group beginning February 7th.  The group will provide students the opportunity to discuss how to cope with stress, depression, and other pertinent topics.  Check with the guidance office for more details.  I would also like to remind seniors to check in the guidance office for scholarship opportunities, because deadlines are quickly approaching.  Finally, I would like to share with you some important dates and events:

  • Parent meeting regarding the dual enrollment Agriculture classes offered to our students through Sauk Valley Community College on February 7th at 6:00 p.m. in the auditorium
  • PBIS celebration at DHS on February 16th - Wonder will be shown in the auditorium
  • SAT and PSAT will occur on April 10
  • Prom - April 21
  • Senior final exams - May 10 and 11
  • Graduation practice - May 16th at 7:45 a.m. in the gym
  • Graduation - May 20 at 1:00 p.m.

If you have any questions, please contact me at your convenience.

Parents,

This is our first attempt to share information through my blog.  Today marks the first day of second semester.  The deadline to change classes is Friday, January 12, 2018.  Please know that classes will only be changed for educational reasons.  Seniors and their parents need to know that there are only 133 days until graduation.  Students should stop in the guidance office to check on scholarship opportunities and to check their transcripts.

First semester grades will be transcribed by January 12th.  First semester final exam make up day will be Saturday, January 13th from 8:00 a.m. - noon in the DHS Cafeteria.

Registration for fall 2018 classes begins January 19th for juniors, January 26th for sophomores, and February 2nd for freshmen.  Finally, construction continues at Dixon High School.  The 3rd floor asbestos abatement went as scheduled.  Students may communicate that the ceiling tiles in the rooms have not been replaced, which would be correct.  As I told the staff, we will have to be flexible during this time of remodeling.  I wish all the  students a productive 2nd semester and would be happy to answer any questions.  Please email me at mgrady@dps170.org.

Parents, in an effort to become more user friendly, I have created this blog to improve communication between Dixon High School and parents.  Tonight will be our last face to face Parent Advisory meeting.  Beginning in January, I will use this blog to disseminate  important information.  If you have specific questions or comments, please email me your responses at: mgrady@dps170.org.  I will share your responses on the blog so that others may see the answers.  If you have any suggestions on how to better communicate with parents, please let me know.
